School is over for the year, I have an apartment in the city, and I'm looking for work. So far I've had a few nibbles, but no bites. I've heard back from a few publishers and a clothing company. I did a few samples for the company in hopes of them hiring me. Most of the designs are recycled, but they get the point across.

Got a new pet. RATTYRATTYRATTYRAT

And this thing I just did...i dunno.

| We Need Another Beard in Office. |
[Feb. 17th, 2008|09:07 pm] |
It has been far too long since our country elected some facial hair to office. How do you expect some baby-faced wimp to lead a real country?
Observe:
1)President Kramer (dorktastic)

2)President Badass (It's best to not even make eye contact, because your face will melt)

4) Too late, loser

5) No

6) Yes

i rest my case |

| | Migration by Innocence Mission | ] | 1.) Today I found this old interview I did with Illustrator Carson Ellis, and figured I might as well post a few of the questions from it here. Enjoy
J: Did you study art at any sort of academy (if so, where) or are you self taught?
C: I got a BFA in Painting from the University of Montana.
J: You are generally most well-known for your work with the musicians The Decemberists. Had you done any design work in the music industry before that?
C: Their singer, Colin, is my boyfriend and when we were in college I made posters and album art for his old band, Tarkio. But other than that, no. I made a lot of posters for venues in Portland when I first moved here but I didn't really work as a paid illustrator until I was in my late twenties.
J: What sort of work do you find the most rewarding/enjoyable? ( i.e: editorial/concept/cover work/advertising)
C: I still love all the stuff I do for the Decemberists. I have a lot of creative autonomy, love collaborating with Colin, and the music is endlessly inspiring to me. Also, there are so many different types of things that need to be done - t-shirts, posters, stage sets, backdrops, album art, website art - it keeps me from getting bored. Other than that I mostly limit myself to kids' book illustration, which I'm just starting to do but I love. I never liked editorial work that much and I used to like advertising gigs because they pay so well but once I felt like I could afford to turn them down, I did.
J: Which types of early work experience/internships would you recommend to artists trying to begin an illustration career?
C: I'm totally the wrong person to ask - I was a bartender until I was 27. Though I guess doing free work for a band until they get famous and start paying you might be a form of "interning" - I certainly learned a lot. I actually would recommend working pro-bono or on the cheap for bands if you're a music fan. Poster and flyer art is a really great vehicle for illustration and design, especially if you like typography like I do.
J: You seem to base a lot of your art on classic themes. What sort of references/models do you use?
C: I draw from photos a lot. If I make a big, detailed drawing I'll typically have a stack of reference books and source images I'm looking at. I have a collection of early portraits that I like to use for inspiration. I also find tons of source photos online. I use google image search a lot and I love the digital archive on the New York Public Library site. I have a book called "Complete Irish Wildlife" that I use all the time to draw flora and fauna, a picture book of 19th century Portland mansions I use to draw houses, etc.
J: A very simple and stylized approach gives your art a charming and naive quality. Have you always been inclined to work that way?
C: Not always, but I think I've tended that way since college. Increased interest in folk and outsider art over the past ten years has definitley had an influence on me. And much of the art I love is similarly naive. Ben Shahn's a great example. He's adept where he needs to be and crude where he wants to be. The result is that emotionally his drawings seem really childlike and open, but intellectually they're incredibly complicated. I definitely aspire to that kind of dynamic.
J: Do you ever experiment with unconventional materials or surfaces, and if so, which ones have you enjoyed the most?
C: I'm a big fan of drawing on old manilla envelopes and other sorts of weathered paper. I don't know how unconventional that is - it's definitely not very archival.
J: What general advice would you give to young artists facing the intimidation of such a risky field?
C: I would advise young artists to be patient with themselves. It takes a long time to develop a drawing style and sensibility that is unique and sincere and the learning process doesn't end when you graduate from art school. I wasn't ready to work as an illustrator when I graduated ten years ago. My work wasn't really bad, it was just unsubtle and I hadn't found a medium I really loved to work in yet. So by all means, work hard and be persistent but if you're having trouble finding work it may be because you're not quite ready to work yet. Don't get discouraged though - take your time and let yourself develop as an artist. And if you need to, figure out a way to support yourself in the meantime that doesn't make you miserable. That way you can enjoy honing your craft and not feel as desperate to find work right away.

I seem to be losing the peace that I had whene i first got here. It's like a constant anxiety, never feeling like eating, always pacing the room, staying up too late, falling into old bad habits...I guess thats the consequence of starting to feel at home again. Why is "home" one of the only places i don't feel entirely comfortable? It's like my body is saying to my brain, "scew you, we don't like you anymore. go die in a hole" |

He's eating lunch is his room right now, typing on the keyboard. He doesn't have any money left, but school is teaching him so many things. now words have more maenings. contrast, conflict, competition, direction, clarity; those words not only apply to images, but feelings as well. all of the conflicting emotions really paint a puzzling composition for him. But that's a good thing....right? |

It's pretty trippy so far, and so surreal to imagine that there is a college built for people to come and draw and make crap all day. I dont have the internet in my room yet, so i have to mooch off of coffee shops and campus buildings. yeah, thats about all i have to say. |
